About Me

hats - collecting and cleaning tips

My son has a big obsession with hats. Everywhere that we go, he has to buy a hat. This hat collection has grown to be so large that it takes up every wall in his room and even a few that are suspended from his ceiling. How can you keep hats organized and in good condition? How do you clean hats that have become stinky and dirty? After a lot of trial and error I have found several ways to control the hat collection in his room and ways to keep the hats that he wears most often looking and smelling fresh.

Looking For Athletic T-Shirts? 3 Things To Look For In Performance Tees

There are plenty of good reasons why you may not want to run or work out in the same T-shirts that you wear for everyday use. You may not want the T-shirts that you wear out and about to get regularly soaked in sweat, for one thing. But can wearing T-shirts specifically made for athletic performance improve your workout as well as save your wardrobe? Take a look at some performance T-shirt features that can actually enhance your workout experience.

Wicking

One of the big advantages that performance T-shirts can provide is wicking. T-shirts made of wicking material can actually prevent you from becoming soaked with sweat and keep your skin dry while you work out. In addition to keeping you more comfortable, this can help prevent rashes and skin irritations that may occur when your skin is wet for too long.

Performance tees with wicking ability work because they're made from breathable fabric that transfers sweat from the material to the air around you, rather than absorbing it. This usually means that performance T-shirts are made from a synthetic fabric like polyester, although sometimes T-shirt manufacturers create a wicking fabric by blending cotton and polyester together. If you find that you experience rashes and chafing when your skin is sweaty, or if you just hate the feeling of being soaked in sweat, a performance tee with wicking ability may be right for you.

Temperature Control

Another feature provided by performance tees is the ability to help you maintain a consistent temperature. Have you ever stopped working out and realized that, even though you were hot and worked up a sweat while working out, you're now feeling cold? This is called an "after-chill." After-chill isn't always a bad thing—it can help you cool down if you're out in the blazing sun—but it can be uncomfortable to suddenly feel cold when you're working out in your air-conditioned home or gym. And if you're exercising outside in the cold winter weather, too much after-chill can actually be dangerous.

After-chill occurs because of the sweat that's absorbed into ordinary clothes when working out. When an absorbent material like cotton soaks up sweat while you're working out, it doesn't disperse the moisture into the air like a wicking material does; it just stays wet. So, when you stop working out and your wet t-shirt clings to your skin, you feel cold. If you were working out topless, your sweat would cool your body down in a similar way. The difference is that a shirt full of sweat can feel a lot cooler than the sheen of sweat that would stay on your bare skin. Wearing a performance tee with wicking capability eliminates after-chill by removing the moisture from your t-shirt entirely, which can make for a more comfortable workout.

Odor Resistance

One more important feature to look for in performance t-shirts is odor resistance. You might think that because performance shirts remove the moisture from your sweat, this also eliminates odor, but this is not necessarily true. The truth is that untreated synthetic fabrics often develop more of an odor than cotton clothing. This is because cotton has antimicrobial properties, so it eliminates the microbes that cause bad smells. On their own, synthetic fabrics don't have these properties.

So, what can you do if you want a fabric with wicking capabilities that won't smell bad after a hard workout? Look for performance tees that are treated with minerals or salts that eliminate odors. For example, some performance tees are made with small nanoparticles of silver. You can't see them, but they reduce the growth of the types of bacteria that lead to odors in clothing.

A performance t-shirt with wicking, temperature-control, and odor-resistant capabilities can make your workout more comfortable, and that increase in comfort can help you improve your own performance and enhance your endurance. This kind of athletic wear can be instrumental in helping you achieve your fitness goals.
